"I want to congratulate our armed forces, our territorial defense complex, and especially our air defense and military aviation, because the 31st drug-carrying plane of this year was shot down yesterday in Apure State," the Venezuelan leader said, as reported by News Armenia website.
He added that a Venezuelan military aircraft on Monday destroyed eight drug-trafficking planes in the Amazonas State near the border with Brazil, bringing the total to 39 this year.
Maduro stressed that 430 drug-carrying planes have been shot down and destroyed in Venezuela ever since the country passed a law to combat drugs.
Washington accuses the Venezuelan authorities of insufficiently combating drug trafficking. And President Donald Trump on Monday confirmed a US strike on an area allegedly involved in drug smuggling from Venezuela.
